This lesson was created for students preparing for the 9th grade NYS Common Core Regents Exam in Algebra. This lesson instructs and assesses students on multiple Common Core State Standards.

OBJECTIVE: All students will be able to solve a system of linear equations graphically and state the solution as a point (x,y).

LESSON ELEMENTS:

DO NOW: spiraled review designed to build momentum in the opening moments of class
MAD MINUTE: timed practice on essential basic skills – designed to build automaticity
WARM UP: longer review on prior lesson – designed to build fluency toward mastery
PRACTICE: quick hits and more challenging at-bats – assess ability with increased rigor
EXPLORE: allows students to access guided discovery of new concept before delivery
RULES & TOOLS: instructional delivery of new concept – rules, steps and procedures
GUIDED PRACTICE: gradual release of cognitive work with increasing rigor
INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE: multiple problems with increasing rigor and varied problem types
BREAK DOWN & LIGHT UP: student analysis of concept – written reflections and extensions
REVIEW: spiraled (often recycled) review on the more rigorous aspects of prior standards
EXIT SLIP: informal assessment of student progress toward mastery of objective
HOMEWORK: front & back assignment that includes work from current and prior standards
KEY INCLUDED – embedded in word document (as comments) (hidden when printed)

LESSON NOTES:

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Students should know how to graph linear functions, write linear functions from graphs, identify slope and y-intercept from a function, identify slope and y-intercept from graphs, write linear equations in y=mx+b form, graph simultaneous linear equations, check points as solutions to a linear equation in two variables.

STANDARDS DRIVEN: Students are primarily expected to graph a pair of simultaneous linear equations and state the solution as an (x,y) pair that satisfied the linear equation in both variables. Students will be expected to extend this to include linear functions that are given in other forms, given as two-points, and given in context.This will follow a lesson on writing linear functions from in y=mx+b form and will precede a lesson on solving systems of linear equations algebraically.
