This packet is complete with activities honoring 9/11 for older students. What better way to encourage students to reflect on what 9/11 means to them?
This packet includes three articles about the 9/11 attacks and seven songs written about 9/11 with accompanying reflection worksheets. Teacher can choose from the articles as well as seven lyrics from popular musicians ranging from Leonard Cohen, Beastie Boys and Bon Jovi to Toby Keith, Darryl Worley and dc Talk. The Toby Keith and Darryl Worley songs were especially well-received by students. All songs can be found on youtube.com. Videos on 9/11 can also be found on History.com.
Although songs were chosen for their 9/11 content, one could also use the lyrics to deal with imagery, figurative language and symbolism. A vocabulary PowerPoint presentation in the ExC-ELL format is included for one song, as well as general notes on theme and writing Thesis Statements. Five reflective essay prompts are also offered to allow for student choice.
These activities are scaffolded and differentiated: teacher decides on groupings for analyzing the text, decides the extent to which articles and lyrics are explored and determines length of writing prompts. The whole class might read together, one group might analyze only one song, while another group might analyze all three of the songs. Duration depends on teacher objectives: usually one to two class periods.
