One of the best ways to increase comprehension is increasing vocabulary. One of the ways I try and do that is with Martha Speaks. I have done this in my classroom, as a center, during snack time, even homework. We simply watch a 13 min episode of Martha Speaks on pbskids.org. Each episode features several vocabulary words (I have them listed in this set by season and episode name and number). This is a PREP FREE lesson. You don't even have to make copies. I provided a sample of how I use it on the SAY IT, DRAW IT, USE IT page but your students can make this on copy paper. We define the word together then put it in our own words, we draw it, we use it in a sentence. This set is useful for K-4th grade. I use it in my ESL classroom, but I've had classroom teachers use it with great success as well.
