This yearlong Common-Core aligned curriculum map for 9th grade English was curated using the Understanding by Design curriculum planning model. It includes 6 comprehensive units that all contribute to the overarching theme of identity - a valuable exploration for students at the beginning of their high school experience.
The six units are:
➢ Unit 1: How Identity is Constructed and Expressed
Core Text: short stories and poems
➢ Unit 2: Cultural Identity and the Role of the Family
Core Text: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
➢ Unit 3: The Intersection of Individuality and Social Norms
Core Text: The Crucible by Arthur Miller
➢ Unit 4: Painted Masks: The Individual Without Civilization
Core Text: Lord of the Flies by William Golding
➢ Unit 5: Dehumanization and the Reconstruction of Identity
Core Text: A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah
All fiction units incorporate analysis of numerous informational texts, including articles, documentaries, primary texts, and diverse multimedia. Performance tasks are varied and include engaging projects and all types of writing addressed in the ELA Common Core standards for grades 9-10. Short research tasks are also included.
The map could easily be adapted for other grade levels, and is aligned to grade 10 standards as well (though much of the content might not be suitable below grades 8).
