This is a FULL teaching unit on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I taught this unit to my inner city students and thought long and hard about how to make this text relevant to them. This unit utilizes many different strategies to make the play comprehensible and fun! It blends acting, artistic, and writing activities. It focuses on the themes of love and hate. Some activities are creating a mask for Capulet's masquerade party, reader's theater using the balcony scene, an illustration of Queen Mab, and a summative assessment in which students create a tabloid or a theme poem about one of the scenes from the play. Students also engage in a debate in which they argue Friar Laurence's involvement or innocence within the play. This unit includes full lesson plans, handouts and organizers, study guides, and a final exam on the play.
