Product Description
These fun creative writing topics will get students thinking about literature in new ways. You will love them because they will engage your students in thinking about literature in new ways, and your students will love them because they are lots of fun.

The assignments are some that I have developed over the years when I wanted to assess my students but didn’t believe that a test or quiz would truly capture what they had learned in a unit of study—or when I wanted to grade something different for a change!

All of the topics here will result in original, creative writing pieces. Your students will enjoy writing poems, stories, cooperative plays, and even an epic poem.

All assignments include instructions for the teacher and students and pre-writing questions or activities with ready-to-go handouts. The first four topics include rubrics for grading final products.

Assignments included in this bundle at 50 percent off when you buy them together:

Creative Writing and Research: Historical Fiction Assignment
In this assignment, students will research a specific time period by examining a novel that you are studying in class. Their resulting piece will combine the elements of story telling with their research to create a fun and original piece of historical fiction.

Fun Creative Writing Project For Any Text | The Villain Tells the Story
This creative writing assignment tasks students with rewriting a text from the point of view of the villain or protagonist. After answering questions for close reading on the picture book “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs,” students will gain an understanding of point of view, perspective, and tone. They will then create an original story and learn empathy and compassion for people who are misunderstood.

Fun Creative Writing Assignment for The Iliad or The Odyssey

This assignment is a great hit with students. They learn the elements of an epic poem, and they incorporate those elements into an original story about the “battles” that they fight on a daily basis. A great alternative to a test or quiz on epic poems, this assignment is also lots of fun to grade.

Shakespeare Modern Play Project: Cooperative Creative Writing and Close Reading
Students will work together to paraphrase, analyze, and rewrite a scene from a Shakespeare play. Not only will they work cooperatively to understand the meaning of the words, they will think together to create a modern scene that demonstrates the universality and timelessness of the themes in Shakespeare’s work. And when they perform their scenes for the class, you will have a writing assignment that can be graded on the spot.

Students will write their own imitations of the original poem—and they will have lots of fun reading their results. (So plan on plenty of class time for sharing!)
