This package is the perfect companion for the story, "A Bad Case of the Stripes." It's a perfect Back-To-School book, because the “be yourself” theme sets the tone for student behavior and expectations in the classroom. The story provides opportunities to spark class discussions on how an inclusive classroom environment should look and how it should feel to be part of that class. It also provides many opportunities to celebrate diversity while addressing peer pressure and bullying issues.
Activities were created to be used before, during, and after reading. Answer Keys are provided. Worksheets Included are:
• Pre-Reading Activity: Students preview book while making predictions to identify story elements and book themes
• Vocabulary Word Scramble
• Vocabulary Cloze Activity (Working with Words)
• Cause and Effect: Matching Activity Sheet
• Comprehension Skills: End-of-Book Assessment (Multiple Choice, True/False, Short Answer Response)
Also included is a Vocabulary PowerPoint (.pdf format) which defines and illustrates some of the more challenging words found in the text. Words defined, illustrated, and used in a sentence are:
A graphic organizer is included to be paired with the Vocabulary PowerPoint. The graphic organizer allows students to fully interact with the vocabulary lesson. They are expected to list the vocabulary word, write its synonym, and then define the vocabulary word by sketching a simple illustration (This graphic organizer is meant to be copied back-to-back so all 12 words are listed).
Worksheets are completed in both .pdf and .doc form so that you can either simply print out the worksheets as is, or edit them to fit your own students’ needs. A Bad Case of the Stripes is a great story to use as a mentor text to jumpstart both your Language Arts and Character Education programs.
