This emergent reader, by Martha Krein, uses simple text to teach young readers about birds. Young readers can read the non-fiction story independently or with some guidance from an adult.
Students use several reading strategies such as sight words, picture and context clues, sounds, vowel pairs and cvc words to decode text. It’s a great way to practice these common core literacy objectives.
Sight words included are: some, do, not, where, it, is, all.
Most of my middle of the year kindergarten readers could read this after I had introduced facts about birds. The National Geographic Book, Birds is a great resource to introduce a bird unit to kindergartners.
This beginning reader is available to download in black in white.
