This comprehensive bilingual activity guide asks students to respond to a series of open-ended questions while watching "A Better Life". There is a section for before the film, three sections for during the film, and one section for after the film. There is an extra credit prompt at the end of the handout.
The film is 94 minutes long, so I would allot at least 3 hours to this lesson. The activity guide tells you when to stop the film to give students the opportunity to respond to the prompts. Some prompts can be answered before getting to the "stopping points", but I prefer to have students think about these questions for a little while before responding. This works well as a classroom activity, but can also be used for homework. Before doing this activity, students should know how to support a claim with evidence. They will be asked to make a claim and to support each claim with evidence; each question should be answered in paragraph form.
All of the questions are written in English and Spanish.
The file is a .docx file, so you can edit it to meet the specific needs of your students.
