How about a little integration of science and reading? Science reading passage set comes complete with ELA style common core aligned questions.

Set contains two levels (ON Grade and Approaching) to meet the needs of your students.

Supports Standards:

SC.8.P.8.7 Explore the scientific theory of atoms (also known as atomic theory) by recognizing that atoms are the smallest unit of an element and are composed of sub-atomic particles (electrons surrounding a nucleus containing protons and neutrons).

SC.8.N.3.2 Explain why theories may be modified but are rarely discarded.

NGSS: MS-PS1-1

TEKS: 8.3(C): identify advantages and limitations of models such as size, scale, properties, and materials; 

TEKS 8.3(D): relate the impact of research on scientific thought and society, including the history of science and contributions of scientists as related to the content. 

TEKS 8.5(A): describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations, of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in the electron cloud;

Readability: 

All of our text is checked with multiple metrics to assure it is at an appropriate complexity for the student. By using multiple metrics, our experienced and knowledge staff are better able to determine an appropriate grade level rating. In most cases (we are still working on updating all text), you will see our text marked as Approaching, On-Grade, or Advanced per a specific grade.  

We are also careful to create text with an appropriate length using a well-established norm (Grade Level x 100 + 100/300 words).  We do this so our text to be used not just in the science classroom to support content, but also to be used in a reading classroom to support the development of strong readers. All of our text comes with at least 5 ELA-style questions for this purpose.

Candlelight Science is a group of educator/writers. All have been (most still are) traditional classroom teachers with an average of 20 years of experience. We started our work because of a local need, but quickly realized the need for high quality, inexpensive resources was great. In response, we continue to produce science readers with multiple reading levels (compatible with CCSS text-complexity requirements), lesson plans, and even assessments to make the lives of teachers easier and more productive.

NGSSMS-PS1-1
Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures. Emphasis is on developing models of molecules that vary in complexity. Examples of simple molecules could include ammonia and methanol. Examples of extended structures could include sodium chloride or diamonds. Examples of molecular-level models could include drawings, 3D ball and stick structures, or computer representations showing different molecules with different types of atoms. Assessment does not include valence electrons and bonding energy, discussing the ionic nature of subunits of complex structures, or a complete depiction of all individual atoms in a complex molecule or extended structure.
