Each episode lasts approximately 30 minutes and provides a wealth of high-level primary sources and commentary on the history under study. The time frame of about half-an-hour of content makes the series an ideal addition to most high school classrooms. In the space of single class period, you will have time to both show the episode and discuss the content as you go over worksheet answers with the class.

Episode 12 Video Content: Reconstruction

"Professor Miller begins the program by evoking in word and picture the battlefield after the battle of Gettysburg. With the assassination of President Lincoln, one sad chapter of American history comes to a close. In the fatigue and cynicism of the Civil War's aftermath, Reconstructionism becomes a promise unfulfilled."

About this A Biography of America Worksheet

This worksheet set includes several resources to help you use the episode effectively:

  • A cloze worksheet formatted to fit on a single sheet of paper if you print on both sides
  • A simple answer key to use to correct student papers
  • A contextual answer key that provides each answer in its context from the program, to aid in going over answers with the class.

Lesson Plan Ideas

There are a number of ways you might approach using these worksheets and the accompanying videos in class:

  • Distribute worksheets and play the video, instructing students to write down answers as the video plays. (All problems are in video order.) After the video ends, go over the answers out loud, either by calling on students to announce their answers or by going through the key yourself, discussing content as appropriate.
  • Play the video and instruct students to take detailed notes. After the video finishes, call on each student to announce one piece of information from the episode. Encourage each student to contribute something new instead of repeating what a classmate has said. After this mini-review, distribute the worksheets and have students fill them out from memory and their notes. Collect worksheets to grade or go over them with the students as outlined in the bullet point above.
  • As above, but when students get to the stage where they are filling out the worksheets, have them work in pairs or groups so that what one person doesn’t recall, another one may. Have groups compare answers after this, and then finally go through the key to allow students to correct their own work.

Convenience Features Save Teachers Time!

These A Biography of America worksheets are set up to discourage students from writing directly on them. This is so that you can make one class set and use it across multiple classes for several years, saving you valuable time at the copy machine or making print-outs.

About the Series A Biography of America

A Biography of America presents history not simply as a series of irrefutable facts to be memorized, but as a living narrative. Prominent historians -- Donald L. Miller, Pauline Maier, Louis P. Masur, Waldo E. Martin, Jr., Douglas Brinkley, and Virginia Scharff -- present America's story as something that is best understood from a variety of perspectives. Thought-provoking debates and lectures encourage critical analysis of the forces that have shaped America. First-person narratives, photos, film footage, and documents reveal the human side of American history -- how historical figures affected events, and the impact of these events on citizens' lives.”

The Closed Captions Option Facilitates Differentiated Learning!

The online video player includes a “CC” button which enables the display of English subtitles. These can be useful for students who learn best through multiple modalities: both reading and hearing at once. They can also be helpful for English learners and/or special needs students who may understand the program much better when they can read along instead of merely hear the narration.
