PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW:
This is a 43 page, ready-to-use packet for teachers to use with students in grades 3-5 who are reading the book, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, by Judy Blume. Here you will have all the student materials needed for a successful literature circle or novel study group. First, you will find a page with student bookmarks for writing vocabulary words as students come across them in their reading. Second, I have included an end-of-book comprehension test (along with a teacher key) that be used once the unit is completed. Most importantly, there is a 20 page student booklet (plus an answer key) designed to reinforce essential reading and writing skills. And finally, I've included a chart showing the Common Core Standards supported.

The student booklet (made by copying & stapling the pages or punching holes for notebooks) divides the text into FIVE reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. Skills addressed include: connecting to the text, vocabulary, comprehension, point-of-view, character traits, visualizing, noticing historical evidence, homophones, onomatopoeia & hyperbole, and summarizing Students also practice providing constructed written responses. The student booklet is designed for independent work so that students can be working on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. Depending on the structure of the classroom, students are typically responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying questions each week; assignments can be done in class or at home. Students should then meet weekly with other students reading the same book (and generally with a teacher, aide or parent) to discuss the book and review the assignments.

Customize the use of this packet as you wish. What worked for me, may not be what works best for you. For example, instead of using this as class work, the packet could also be used as homework. Also, instead of creating a booklet, the pages can be copied and handed out singly as separate assignments and kept in a notebook.

Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great in a nutshell:
Sheila Tubman is 10 years old and excited that her family will be living in a small town for the summer instead of their hot New York City apartment. There will be an art camp, swimming pool, a bedroom of her own! Unfortunately, it seems that she is finding that she's afraid of many of the new things she encounters...though she tries to hide her fears. This hilarious book provides both humor and insight into growing up and making friends. Judy Blume's books have entertained children for decades and you're sure to find this book will appeal to your students as well!
