This pack contains 13 centers and activities for practicing nonsense words. Nonsense words do not make sense. So, why do we use them? Nonsense words are not explicitly taught. These words work really well as a quick, reliable, and valid way of assessing alphabetic principal. Students can not sound out nonsense words from memory and have to rely on phonics decoding skills and alphabetic code to read them. Students decode individual phonemes and then blend them together to make a word.
Nonsense words allow teachers to know if students are grasping syllable types (cvc, r-controlled vowels, silent e, etc.) and have a solid foundation of letter-sound correspondence. Nonsense words allow students to attack difficult words they come across when reading. Students who are fluent with nonsense words will have a better understanding on decoding unfamiliar words within the text they read.
The 13 centers included are great in cooperative learning structures, centers, RTI, small groups, etc.! The options are endless. Parent notes and progress monitoring is included.
