Great for developing sentence-level reading and writing fluency! Each of the four fun comics weave five phonic words into two sentences to produce an entertaining story. Support activities help students do the same as they succinctly incorporate the six traits of effective writing—ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions.
OBJECTIVE: to read and write phonics-rich sentences varying in length and structure that engage through personality-packed characters, dynamic plot action, a clear message, pleasing word sounds, and varied free-flowing sentences.
In each of the four mini-lessons, students first use visuals to learn five phonic family words (-uff, -ay, -iss, and -odd) and imagine how they might combine them to form a story. Then they practice reading fluency by reading comic strip sentences incorporating these words. Next, students engage in partner reading and discussion of the comic phonic story, and write a retell of it. Finally, through guided practice they combine story elements to compose a one-sentence retell and are challenged to write their own Comic Phonic story using the -uff phonic word family.
Benefiting from the structures, sounds, and ideas of the model comic, students are able to compose comics whose words please, rhythms attract, characters engage, and ideas entertain. How rich and effective their writing is!
