PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A Chair for My Mother is a great book to use with upper elementary during units on natural disasters and emergencies.

This is a story about a family and their community working together during a time of need. Students will learn about saving, setting goals, and helping others after unforeseen natural disasters or emergencies.

When: During student unit on natural disasters and emergency response and/or Mother’s Day.

Where & How: Use in individual or small group speech sessions. Can be used across 6-7 thirty-minute sessions, not including the book reading time.

Activity 1: Vocabulary Memory (BONUS black & white version)
A fun way to pre-teach or review vocabulary. Divide picture cards and definition cards and place face-down on table. Students take turns picking word cards and definition cards. If they find a match, that student keeps the card and takes another turn.

Activity 2: 100 Punches Describing
Your students will not stop describing! Describe each item from the story using the question prompts provided or EET. Students punch a hole for each accurate detail. Punch a hole in the corner and secure with a paperclip for home practice.

Activity 3: 100 Punches Articulation R
Many of my 3rd – 5th grade students are working on R so why not target words from the story? Highlight the word, sentence or prompt based on the student’s goal. Students punch a hole for each accurate production and work on self-discrimination. Punch a hole in the corner and secure with a paperclip for home practice.

Activity 7: Chair Conjunction Activity (BONUS editable version)
Ask students to pick two people that they would buy a chair for and describe what kind of chair they would like. Then have students write their responses in the provided spaces using the subordinating conjunction “if”.
