Activities for use with the short story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Includes a variety of options to fit your classroom needs including reading questions, assessments, graphic organizers, projects, and vocabulary.

Contents:

Reading, Thinking, Test Questions: Reading questions in order of the text and divided by stave, with recall as well as inference about characters and story. Critical Thinking questions for each stave, to be used with the reading questions or separately. Assessment questions are short answer and include one set divided by stave (such as for reading quizzes) and another that covers the entire text. Keys provided.

Graphic Organizers: Includes Word Webs (Mood, Setting, Christmas Spirit, Literary Elements, and Scrooge, with answer key), Cause and Effect Organizer related to events in the text, Ghost Lesson organizer to review details on the locations visited plus lesson learned—all keys provided. Also includes a KWL, since many students have been exposed to the concepts already (no key).

A Christmas Carol Literary Essay: choice of 6 literary essay topics. Student instruction sheet has topics and rubric. Also includes planning worksheet to support writing process plus Quick Guide to Literary Essays handout.

A Christmas Carol Culminating Projects: set of 16 projects offered in Task Cards, Student Menu, and Choice Board, with several versions to choose from. Projects are divided in 4 categories: Visual Creations, Beyond the Text, Retelling, and Comparisons. One task card for each project. Student Menu version includes star values with preprinted instructions and blank—offered in full 16 project set or condensed 12 choice version. Choice Board also has several preprinted versions, and is offered in both the full 4x4 board, as well as a condensed 3x3 version. Condensed versions remove the Retelling category of projects.

Movie vs. Book Comparison Activity: several choices for comparing the text of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens with some or all of one of the movie or play versions. Includes evaluation of the movie vs book pairing with several options.

Vocabulary Activity: Includes student terms list, answer key, plus terms task cards. Can be assigned before or during reading the text. Also works well to jigsaw as a class for reference during reading.

Past, Present, and Future Personal Writing (A Christmas Carol): Students will consider and write about a lesson from their past, a reflection from their present, and path they want to take for the future—and how these connect to make a path from where they started to where they are going. Includes step-by-step prewriting process and rubrics for both a narrative essay and a multimedia project.
