Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a classic tale - it’s short - it’s familiar to almost everyone - and it should be on the reading list for all junior high or high school students. But no matter how familiar it may be to us, it has some unfamiliar historical allusions and some difficult vocabulary words. If you read this novel with your students, this unit will give you insightful discussion questions, that may also be used as test questions, and will give you a head start on its vocabulary. I have included annotated vocabulary lists for each of the five Staves (Dicken’s word for chapter), which have a total of 455 words and their definitions. Also included are several tests on each Stave, divided between plot and character questions and vocabulary questions. An answer key is also included. There are a total of 48 pages in this unit. (The number of pages is somewhat high because the test pages have questions spaced out to allow students to write answers below them.) This novel unit is available as a series of PDFs.
