This product is a complete unit plan for the Charles Dickens classic story, "A Christmas Carol." The unit consists of the following:
PAGE 1 - PROBABLE PASSAGE VOCABULARY ACTIVITY, which requires students to place 12 different vocabulary terms from the story into separate categories. Key concepts for this activity include: CHARACTERS, SETTING, CONFLICT, and RESOLUTION.
PAGES 2-3 - "A CHRISTMAS CAROL" WEBQUEST ACTIVITY, which allows students to locate and analyze information about the story. Key concepts include: VICTORIAN ERA, NOVELLA, and AUTHOR'S PURPOSE. This activity is also differentiated: the At- and Above-Level Groups' handout is signified with a triangle at the bottom, and the Below-Level Groups' handout is signified with a circle.
PAGES 4-7 - JIGSAW ACTIVITY CARDS, which can be used in several ways to help students learn the key concepts and main characters of the story. I like to use this as a anticipatory set and allow students to work in groups to match the terms with their descriptions. The key concepts in this activity are: SETTING, MOOD, TONE, IRONY, THEME, SYMBOLISM, and CHARACTERS.
PAGE 8 - "A CHRISTMAS CAROL" DRAMA-MOVIE COMPARE/CONTRAST ACTIVITY, which I use at the end of the Unit, when we watch the movie version of the drama (play). This activity requires students to stay focused when watching the movie, identifying and evaluating main similarities and differences.
