Overview of Content…
As a pre-reading activity for each stave, this product includes PowerPoint presentations, conveniently animated to reveal definitions to ten vocabulary terms found in the reading. Students record the definitions on their matching vocabulary guides and then use the terms in their own sentences. A unique feature to these guides is the use of simple icons to represent each term, an effective tool in reinforcing retention for visual learners. By the last stave, students draw their own visual representations of the terms. Keys included.
Students new to the rigor and style of classic literature will appreciate this product’s fill-in-the-blank companion summaries for each stave. The comprehension summary guides (with 25 chronological summarizing statements) enable students to know what to read for in each stave, and they make ideal study guides. This product also includes 10-12 critical analysis questions for each stave, requiring students to engage in a deeper exploration of abstract ideas like symbolism, interpretations, and author motivations. The critical analysis questions are great for small group work, book club discussions, or whole-class instruction. As students become more competent in their analysis skills, these could be assigned as independent work. Keys included.
Each stave includes a post-reading figurative language skills component, beginning with an introductory PowerPoint presentation that teaches similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. Students record notes on their matching graphic organizer (key included) as you present the slides, animated to reveal information in student-friendly chunks. There are 4 exercises for students to apply their figurative language skills in increasing difficulty, beginning with a simple labeling exercise (key included), a partner exercise, a fun competitive group exercise, and a final independent exercise.
ELEMENTS OF FICTION:
Each stave also includes a post-reading elements of fiction skills component, beginning with an introductory PowerPoint presentation that teaches plot, character, setting, style, mood, tone, & theme. Again, this presentation is animated to reveal information chunked for easy note-taking on a matching graphic organizer (key included). There are 3 exercises for students to apply their skills, including a character & setting exercise in which students create social media posts for Scrooge, a tone & point of view exercise that requires students to write something from a character’s perspective using an unconventional tone, and a plot summary exercise at the end of the novel.
There are 2 comprehension assessments covering summary guides and critical analysis content: a 20-question multiple choice quiz covering staves 1-2 (mid-unit); and a 30-question multiple choice quiz covering staves 3-5. Keys included. There are also 2 vocabulary assessments: a 20-point quiz with 10 matching / 10 fill-in-the-blank items covering the 20 terms from staves 1-2; and a similar quiz covering the 20 terms from staves 3-5. Keys included.
All documents and presentations are completely editable. Yes, editable! You’ll find 46 printables in a convenient PDF format. But all 46 documents are also available in their editable PowerPoint format (as are the 6 slide show presentations) so you can customize any part of the product to fit your needs. Do you think the vocabulary terms or comprehension questions are too hard, too easy, or too many? Want to add a slide to one of the presentations? Got some cheaters and need to rearrange test questions or delete my TpT store name? Want to add your student names in test items for a laugh? Do you have SPED, gifted, or ELL students and want to modify a version for their ability? Hate my font choice or icons? Ouch. Or maybe you found a tiny grammar error. I Shirley hope not… but edit whatever you want.
TABLE OF CONTENTS:
I’ve also included two tables of contents (in list and outline format) to organize the printables and presentations in order of use with convenient links to the files. Download a table right to your desktop and every file is available with a click.
