A complete packet for this beloved short story. Great for a holiday activity, a memoir or personal narrative unit, or for a cross-curricular Depression unit with social studies. In-depth comprehension questions based on literary terms such as mood, characterization, theme, symbol, exposition/climax/falling action, and more. Covers several CCSS. See the Preview for the visually appealing format in black and white, suitable for middle school. A version without clipart is also included.
The packet includes:
--Review of literary terms used in the questions (matching)
--Comprehension Questions (27)
--Vocabulary worksheet of 55 terms: identifying examples of figures of speech, using context clues, matching (including colloquialisms), and labeling pictures of terms used in the story which might not be familiar to students, such as stereopticon and five and dime.
--Prewriting form for students' own personal narratives as an extension activity, based on Capote's model
--short Reading on fruitcake history and unusual customs, plus a traditional recipe.
--a version without clipart (at buyer requests) that may be more appropriate for high school
--list of Common Core Standards for 6-10 covered by the questions
--Teacher Notes and a detailed Answer Key
I used this with 6th graders with direct instruction and it may also work for upper high school.
If you are not familiar with the story, there is a brief Christian reference by a character, but it is generally a memory of secular events which take place during the season, such as baking fruitcakes and decorating a tree, without mention of the Nativity.
