Christmas is such a wonderful time of year!
With our many curriculum requirements, it can be difficult to try to incorporate the enjoyment of the holiday season into our already packed schedules. Well, this unit can surely help!
This unit combines the fun of Christmas that students love with many of the Common Core standards required for literacy and social studies!
This unit was developed around the realistic fiction novel entitled:
"A Christmas Sonata" by Gary Paulsen. Paulsen is a very well known author and has written dozens of chapter books for elementary students.
This book is set in the Mid-West United States in the mid 1940's. It follows a small boy as he searches for meaning during the second World War. It is an excellent book with great life lessons as well as being perfect for the holiday season.
This unit includes over 30 pages of very engaging material I developed over a three-year period and that incorporates BOTH best practice literacy strategies and useful themes.
This unit includes the following:
a teacher overview and 3-week plan
a student booklet
integrated social studies lessons (on WWII)
a practical classroom project that draws students into the 1940's
seven sets of multi-level comprehension questions
a unit test
And many more research-based strategies and lessons!
