Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech helped change the course, spread the message, and promote equality in America.
This close read asks students to first read excerpts from the "I Have a Dream" speech (the entire speech is NOT included in this packet), use context clues to discover new vocabulary, as well as to think deeply about the text by answering 10 close read, text-dependent questions.
This has been used by 4th grade students, however, you will need to make the decision on whether your students are mature and ready for this speech (just a fair warning). Students in grades 5th-8th grades will definitely benefit from this deep reading of the speech, as common core suggests that students read complex text, especially those that are historically based.
Includes an answer key, but please know this is just one answer. Your students may come up with other acceptable answers to these questions, as they are text-based, but also, open-ended.
