This lesson is also sold in a lesson bundle: Close Reading Using Picture Books Lesson Bundle for Grades 3-5 If you buy all the lesson in the bundle rather than individually, you save $5.

If you like this lesson, all the lessons in the bundle are sold separately as well:

A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Author's Craft: Word Choice

A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Plot (Uses the Book Knuffle Bunny)

A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Theme (Uses the Book Chester's Way)

A Close Reading Lesson to Teach Character Development (Book: My Name is Yoon)

These lessons were written by myself and two other third grade teachers after we read the book Notice and Note by Beers and Probst, and after we attended a conference on the common core reading standards put on by Lucy Calkins. We thought to ourselves, "Wouldn't it be great if a Notice and Note book existed for younger students?"

These lessons were created to fill that void and to teach young students how to read closely for what a text says (key ideas and details) and how the text says it (craft and structure) The lessons are aligned to CCSS.

We use these lessons in our classrooms to teach our students to read text closely. The students then apply the strategies learned (and use the anchor charts and organizers) to do the same deep reading work with other texts. We have seen tremendous improvement in the way our students are able to analyze text.

All these lessons were co-written by teachers Heather Vidal, Lori Meadows, and myself.
