This course comprises three key areas of English: Reading Comprehension, Spelling and Writing. Each key skill development area contains 10 units of work, ideally presented in 30-minute instructional time allocations, including an Assessment with Report format. A typical program would present one unit per week for ten weeks. Each student workbook provides extensive material for a full term’s literacy development. The spelling units also include activity masters for teachers to create laminated game resources.
These workbooks make exemplary teaching programs for students in regular primary schools, specialised literacy programs, or tutorial/learning centres. Learning centres provide individual and small group instructional programs for primary students, which include all basic skill components of English Language, Literature and Literacy, and which link to the Australian Curriculum outcomes in these areas. These workbooks are the perfect resource for this purpose, as are they for any classroom teacher in a school.
The activities can be delivered to students in targeted teaching areas, or as a combined, holistic and consolidated literacy program. (A teacher may choose to present any two or three key areas in an hour to an hour and a half teaching block each day, or may prefer to focus on one section per day for three days). All units of work are highly motivational, promote fun and active learning, and can be reproduced by purchasers for their students.
Answers are not provided for the reading comprehensions as one of the most important learning strategies for students is how to locate evidence in text. If answers are given, students tend to mark their work without any discussion occurring. An effective comprehension strategy is the dialogue that is generated when students and teachers collaboratively search, and locate the evidence that supports their answers. In multiple choice comprehensions, there are four answer options. By a process of eliminating the wrong answers, students and teachers then specifically locate the contextual information that supports their final answer choice - this is an incredibly powerful learning tool, and one that poignantly teaches comprehension.
Each book forms part of a full year’s English course of 1 book per term (4 books in the set). I am offering Book 1 for each grade level free of charge to encourage teachers to utilise these resources during Term 1 and to purchase the remaining books in each grade set. My anticipated completion time-frame for each workbook is as follows:
Book 1 for all grade levels to be available by the end of January
Book 2 for all grade levels to be available by the end of March
Book 3 for all grade levels to be available by the end of June
Book 4 for all grade levels to be available by the end of August
