This is a culminating creative assignment to be used after reading THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, by J.D. Salinger. For the scrapbook, the students are required to include many elements, such as character and symbol analyses, but they are also given the opportunity to add their own spin on the novel, such as speaking as one of the characters or adding visual images to the pages. The students also enjoyed creating a binder for the scrapbook; one student made a medical file that would have been kept at the psychiatric hospital that treated Holden. I have also included a grading rubric. On the due date, I put students into groups of four and handed out post-its. They read each other's scrapbooks and left positive messages on post-its throughout the books. This creative assignment has been incredibly successful for me when using it with freshmen.
