This is a 2-3 week cross-curricular and project-based unit of study all about the beautiful country of Mexico! It is the product of my travels in Mexico and Colombia in the summer of 2012. As the unit progresses, students participate in a wide variety of hands-on activities and create "artifacts" that become part of their culminating performance task: A culture box of Mexico. Art, literature, music dance and social studies are all incorporated in this engaging unit of study! Perfect for meeting multiple Common Core areas all at once!
It begins with a basic geographical and physical introduction to Mexico. They create land form maps. Students then learn about and create their own Oaxacan folk art and study folk stories. They experience movement through dance and music of Mexico. Most of the lessons are accompanied with PowerPoints. THIS POWERPOINT IS NOW LISTED IN MY PRODUCTS FOR FREE, PLEASE DOWNLOAD IT IF YOU'VE GOTTEN THE UNIT PLAN!!
This unit and others that are based on teachers' experiences traveling abroad through the Fulbright-Hays grant programs are all available for free at:
