Product Description
Leo Africanus is a man of mystery. He wrote elaborate, detailed descriptions of the places he visited, and yet many personal details of his life are unknown. This activity highlights the famous city of Timbuktu. It gives a glimpse into the people, culture, architecture, and the city’s relationship with the world in the Middle Ages. Leo Africanus’s account of Timbuktu is one of the leading records available.

I personally love how this primary source sheds light on the interior of Africa during a time when people thought of Africa as the “Dark Continent.” This source humanizes the people who lived there. It shows them doing ordinary tasks and living regular lives. Your students will appreciate this first person description of Timbuktu from the 1600s.
