A Differentiated -ai and -ay Vowel Team Game for Small Group- Hooray for Birthdays! by Learning Moore in First is a great way to practice fluency and phonics with your small groups.
Two sets of cards are included- the black cards are for your on level/ below level students. The red cards are for your advanced/ above level learners.
To play, place the cards face-down in a stack and deal 6 cards onto the board, one in each square marked by a die.
Students take turns rolling a 6 sided die and reading the card on the board that corresponds with the number they rolled. If they can read the word on the card they keep it. As cards are “won” from the board students should replace them with unread ones from the deck. To make the game more challenging you could have students use the word in a sentence before they can “keep” it.
The game is over when the board is clear and there are no more cards left in the deck.
The winner is the student who has the most cards!
Extensions: Students can sort the cards based on their long vowel spelling pattern, either –ai or –ay.
