For use with the poem “A Dream Within a Dream.” Challenge students with the poem imitation project, where they will analyze the poem to identify select poetic devices, including theme and mood. Then they will use several of those elements in writing their own poem related to dreams or loss. Rubric, planning worksheet, and reflection included.
In the premade poetry analysis, students will analyze a poem to identify mood, style, line length, stanza organization, rhyme, meter, and theme. There is also a blank analysis worksheet that can be used for teacher or student-selected terms.
Imitating literary elements from a model text is a way to practice analyzing and implementing those devices. It can force students to work with elements they wouldn’t normally pick, or even make them actively consider the literary devices they are using.
Students have a good deal of flexibility in how to approach the topic of the poem.
