Description: This assignment combines poetry with fiction to analyze theme. The students not only determine theme, but they also prove it using specific examples from the novel. Finally, they write a well-developed paragraph to explain their poem. The assignment is aligned with the common core curriculum and uses a modified version of the rubric used on the NY State assessment. Models of the organizer, poem and paragraph are also included based on the novel, Among the Hidden.
•This activity occurs after the students have completed a novel.
•Students identify the main topic of their novel and use that topic to determine the theme.
•Students then look through their novel for specific lines from the novel that demonstrates the theme.
•The students collect these lines in an organizer.
•I have the students work with literature circle groups for this portion.
•After the students have collected a sufficient amount of examples they manipulate them to create a poem. I encourage them to find the line that best shows the theme of the novel and repeat it at either the beginning or end of each stanza.
•After completing the poem, students write a paragraph explaining their poem and how it demonstrates the theme.
