At the beginning of the school year, my middle school students set up their Interactive Student Notebooks (ISNs). I want to set the tone in my classroom--that I have high expectations, but that I also believe asking questions and not knowing all of the answers are signs of a good student.
In the midst of my back-to-school activities, I have my students create a circle map of "a good student." I make sure to point out that a good student asks questions, and then I have my students glue this half-sheet handout on the front inside cover of their ISNs. While my students continue to number their ISN pages, I discuss my expectations for them in more detail.
