Product Description
A Greek Champion Activity poster is geared for high school students with appropriate algebraic and geometric skills, and involves applications of logic. From a story-telling perspective, students encounter different obstacles that challenge them to use their math skills to complete an exciting adventure.

Use the two 8.5" x 11" colored masters to produce enough colored back-to-back copies for a classroom set. It is advisable to have the copies laminated for future use.

The "A Greek Champion" activity could be used as either an extended individual or group challenge.

Make sure that the students who will be participating in this activity read the Background and Procedure listed on the poster and also listed below.

Background: It was a time of war and pestilence in ancient Greece and the gods and goddesses were meddling in the affairs of humans. Harmonia, goddess of harmony and concord, and Eris, goddess of strife and chaos, were particularly strong adversaries who were keenly aware of these earthly circumstances. So a wager was made between them. If a human champion could be found to overcome ten obstacles, Eris agreed not to intervene with human affairs for 100 years. Likewise, if this champion failed, Harmonia agreed not to assist humans for one hundred years.

Now suppose you lived during these tumultuous times and were chosen as Harmonia's champion with full knowledge that the consequences of your efforts would determine whether good or evil would control human destiny for the next 100 years. Your task is to retrieve an amulet and deliver it to the altar of the gods. Therefore, apply your skills and insights to overcome the following ten obstacles. Note: Harmonia has secretly given you a magic cloth that will help you in your endeavors.

Procedure: Carefully read the information for each obstacle. Then, using the information available, record your response(s) for each obstacle. When completed, give your completed responses to your instructor who will determine whether or not you have indeed been a champion that overcame evil in these troubled times.

When the activity is completed, each student should turn in the completed responses to the instructor. To enhance student motivation, a "Champion Olympian" certificate is included as a black line master.
