Snyder, A. M. (2014). A guide for secondary teachers to support physical education
programs and improve student participation (Unpublished master’s professional project). Sierra Nevada College, Incline Village, Nevada.
Physical Activity (PA) should be a component of every child’s lifestyle. Physical Education (PE) within the school system offers an opportunity for children to reach the recommended daily amount of exercise. PA has been proven to increase academic performance, improve in-class behavior, and improve the overall health of students. Student participation in secondary PE classes, however, appears to be declining and obesity rates are increasing due to a lack of exercise and poor eating habits (Florin, Shults, & Stettler, 2011). Rates of physical activity in PE classes are determined by many factors, such as, teaching strategies, teacher-student interaction, goal structure, and student confidence. The purpose of this professional project is to give secondary PE teachers a guide to improve student participation. A secondary purpose of the guide is to provide secondary PE teachers with the tools and resources to give students a positive PA experience.
