My students tend to dislike holistic rubrics - such rubrics rarely provide precise and helpful feedback. With this in mind, I have created a one page writing rubric that combines the 6 point writing scale and a series of precise, analytic comments under categories like "Explanation", "Organization", "Sentences" and "Punctuation and Capitalization". It's a little slower than a typical holistic writing rubric but much faster than a detailed mark on a composition. It hits a "sweet spot" that my students have found very helpful... and saves my sanity.
I typically underline areas of concern and checkmark issues that are handled well. Of course, I'll write in comments on the ample space left in the margins.
The rubric is best for formal compositions at the secondary level. After three years of refinement, it's ready for prime time! :-)
