This is a holistic Common Core spelling program which teaches students spelling, grammar, punctuation, varied writing conventions, descriptive writing and vocabulary in context. The use of spelling dictation also fosters attentive listening and memory retention. Through careful scaffolding it addresses the diverse student needs of all students within your classroom; from English Language Learners through Gifted and Talented students. Keep in mind that you can also accommodate for CELDT levels 1 and 2 as needed through more lenient grading while still addressing the necessary standards. The first test can be used for whole class rather than ability grouped, for the purpose of determining where each student should start. The yearlong fourth grade spelling plans correlate with the Houghton Mifflin reading series skills, however are applicable to Common Core language arts standards in general and therefore can be used in any sequence. Some paragraphs are seasonal, or thematic to incorporate science and history, or simply embellished writing to enable visual imagery. Be patient as dictation takes time, but as you and your students adapt you will notice that the attention span increases as well! Results are best if you incorporate a paragraph pretest on Wednesday and final test on Friday. Have fun!
