This comic strip version of A Julia de Burgos, created by one of my talented students (she will receive half of the proceeds), is a great introduction to the two Julias in this poem. Additionally, this pre-reading activity front-loads the students with some important lines and quotes from the poem, giving the student a good understanding of the two sides of Julia Burgos personas, the public and the private side.
The one page full color comic strip comes with 6 pictures, and displays Julias private side in the left-hand column, and her public self in the right-hand column.
This comic strip can be used as a scaffolding piece. I use them to create a group discussion around the pertinent themes in my Spanish AP Literature class.
White out what the two Julias say, and have the students guess, based on the drawings. Students in our AP Language and other courses (Heritage and 3 Honors) have also utilized this comic strips as a form of preparation, or vertical teaming, for the AP Spanish Literature and Culture class.
Students transition much more effectively into the play because they have a clear visual representation in their mind of the character and the story line.
