PPT in PDF format for for the poem "A Julia de Burgos" written by Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos. The PPT has a brief biography for the poet, the text for the poem, questions for discussion to help students analyze the poem and lastly a writing prompt. There are 23 slides.

To accompany the power point I like for students to use a KWL chart. Before viewing the ppt they fill out the column for what they already know. As they view the ppt they fill out what they're learning about Julia de Burgos. Lastly they fill out what they would like to know more in regards to the poet which would lead to a Web Quest. They can look up the information for HW and then turn key to the class the next day as a Do Now.

As a culminating activity I have students use all the data and write a short composition: ¿Quién era Julia de Burgos?

Aftewards students learn about another famous poet, Alfonsina Storni. Then they use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast both poets.

I like to introduce students to these great female poets for the month of Women's History". I also introduce student to Frida Kahlo, famous Mexican painter, and Celia Cruz, queen of Salsa. The lesson makes connections to literature, art and music.
