This lesson focuses on the ancient art technique of Batik, while incorporating and reviewing basic concepts relating to landscape art. Students will learn and understand the process of Batik, including safety, tools and materials, and even how to mat the piece upon completion. Using landscapes as a basis for the work allows students to learn and/or review important art terms and concepts.
This lesson includes:
- introductory Batik handout
- 3 part sketchbook assignment (including project planning)
- safety handout
- "how to" handout on creating a mat frame
- project rubric
This lesson is designed for teachers who have a basic understanding of Batik. It does not include step-by-step directions for using materials or day-by-day plans (so you can decide which areas to spend more or less time on, as needed). Attached documents are for guiding students from understanding, to planning, through creating a Batik artwork.
It's a good idea for students to complete a basic color theory lesson before doing Batik - it truly helps to have an understanding of color theory/mixing. Please visit my listings (Left Hand Art) for a Color Theory lesson.
