Use this PowerPoint for showing students the difference between the basic dynamic markings.
The Colorado state music standards have students starting to use the vocabulary for dynamics earlier than I prefer to teach but taking a risk I used this with my first graders last year and not only did they do well singing the dynamics correctly but they remembered them after a 6 week rotation to their other electives. As second graders they are now reviewing the dynamics and getting ready for the second half of the PowerPoint where they will learn about crescendo and decrescendo
The PowerPoint includes a lesson in what the different dynamics are and how they are organized. There are several slides with just the dynamic symbol where students must identify them in the correct volume (I also like to have that section up and as my students are singing, they have to change their volume according to the dynamic on the screen). There are also notes on how to teach the slides in the notes section of the presentation.
This is also good for review for my students in middle school, especially as they transition to using the Italian name of the dynamics (I start my 3rd and 4th graders using the Italian).
This PowerPoint will be a part of a bundled set of activities for dynamics. I hope you find this useful!
