Please enjoy this end-of-novel activity and project for the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. This product uses authentic material from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) to teach students about the parasite: Guinea Worms, as they read about in the novel. Information on epidemiology and risk factors, biology, the disease itself, the eradication program, management and treatment, and prevention and control, are all included. Lots of images included as well! I usually have the students work in jigsaw groups to close read the sections one by one. There is a note-taking section, as well as a final assignment. For the assignment, students write a letter to Nya, Salva, or his or family's, informing them about the dangers of the parasite, the risk factors, and the treatment. This project requires students to follow a proper letter format, as well as to cite specific evidence from the articles. A unique spin on an end-of-book project which integrates informational text seamlessly with literature. Enjoy!
