This activity for the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park gets students inferring about two characters, comparing and contrasting, selecting evidence to support inferences, and writing a formal written analysis in response to a prompt. Students must infer both Nya's and Salva's personality traits, complete a graphic organizer for each with relevant evidence, complete an outline for their writing, and then write a final draft of their analyses. There are two slightly different choices of prompts and coordinating outlines. A rubric for each is included to make grading a breeze. This activity is best used for after reading a majority of the novel. Common-core standard RL.1 aligned for grades 5-8. Perfect for close reading & upcoming PARCC assessment.
