Students are to create a travel diary documenting Ishmael's grueling journey through Sierra Leone. This assignment requires the student to track the journey-both physically and psychologically- of Ishmael as he is forced to into being a child soldier. Students are to document physical events and psychological effects using textual evidence with proper citations.
This activity could be used in a variety of ways. You could assign it as an individual task or a cooperative group task. For whole class use, you could assign key chapters to pairs or groups with them contributing to a class travel diary via Google Doc or butcher paper.
This would be a great activity to follow up a discussion of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs or even an informational article on parenting styles. It could easily be adapted to fit whatever needs you are targeting with your students.
