This journal (also included in my "Complete Unit" for A Long Way Gone) takes the themes and episodes of Ishmael Beah's heartbreaking novel A Long Way Gone and allows students to relate to the Ishmael's experience and explore their own beliefs and emotions.
The journal is composed of 13 assignments, each requiring students to think deeply and critically about universal themes and subjects, including the human capacity for evil, revenge, trust, happiness, story-telling, love, and more.
This is one of the most successful projects I have had with students. It is so important to make books relevant to students, and this journal provides them with that opportunity. It also paves the way for dynamic class discussions about important issues.
