In this bundled product, you will find two Common Core-aligned products for the study of act I of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The first included product is a literary analysis close reading exercise with guided annotation tasks. Students will first close read Egeus's monologue to the Duke, using teacher-provided annotation tasks, to analyze characterization and the impact of character relationships, word choice and connotation, tone, and conflict. Then, students will apply their analysis and take on the role of director by adding instructions to the monologue that would guide the actor's movement, position, and tone. Use one or both parts of this activity. In addition to giving this to students AFTER reading act I, consider having students complete this activity BEFORE reading act I, so they have a more solid understanding of the plot's direction.
The second included product is a Common Core-aligned critical reading/literary analysis workbook that guides students through critical reading and analysis of act I of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. These higher-order thinking questions are text dependent and require students to refer back to the text to make claims about characters, themes, and elements of culture. Students will have the opportunity to put creativity into some of their responses, as well as make connections to personal experiences and/or other stories.
