Rip off an arm, tear off a leg and have those body parts grow into a new person identical to the original person they came from while that person re-grows a new arm and leg!!!??? Sounds like a horror movie, right? Definitely an appropriate thought for Halloween! In this activity you are going to do something similar! You will be ripping off body parts from a particular plant and having your students “grow” identical plants from these body parts! AHHHHHHHH! That’s right; your students will be horrified at the scene you will present as you act like a mad scientist; ripping off plant parts and throwing them at each student like darts on a dart board. (No students will be harmed by this…) Your students will then take these thrown “body parts” and grow their own identical Halloween themed plant. Parents of your students will love you for this one because the plant you are giving them to grow is a great houseplant! (These houseplants are appropriately named for this holiday!) This is an activity your students will never forget! The enclosed lesson plan comes complete with the exact information that describes how to set the scene up, the best plant to use for this activity that you can use each year as it regenerates those ripped off body parts and creates new, dart-like appendages, and a detailed materials list including what is needed for the students. It also describes information about the biological background of the plant.
A very fun activity for mitosis!
