Description

There’s no denying that Jonathan Swift’s "A Modest Proposal" is hard for the modern teenage reader. When texts, tweets, and status updates are the only lines feeding our students, introducing a satirically ironic treatise on caring for the poor feels hopeless.

These brief lessons were born after two days of intense class discussions and (what I thought was) close reading of the text. An incredulous student slammed her hand down on her desk, looked around, and exclaimed, “He’s talking about EATING BABIES?!”

Perhaps a little more front loading was needed. This product contains four lessons and a reading quiz that might keep you from having one of your students make the same exclamation.

Lesson 1: The Basics of Paraphrasing
Lesson 2: Paraphrasing an Excerpt of “A Modest Proposal”
Lesson 3: The Basics of Summarizing
Lesson 4: Summarizing Sections of “A Modest Proposal”
BONUS MATERIAL: Reading Quiz

A GREAT BUY: This product is included in my AP English Language & Composition Product BUNDLE
