A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is a satirical essay addressing the state of poverty in Ireland. Through humour and irony, Mr. Swift pokes fun of other pamphlets being circulated around on how to deal with the poor in Ireland. In this lesson, students will learn how to use humour and sarcasm to discuss a social issue. They will be exploring Jonathon Swift's A Modest Proposal as well as studying political cartoons. Students will also be given a chance to use their new knowledge to write their own satirical piece and create their own political cartoon on a social issue of their own choice.
