When we are ready to select a topic for narrative writing, I read "A Moment in Time" by Jennifer Butenas to the class then I model this organizer and have students complete it. Much like the "small moment" or "seed idea" guides, this encourages students to think of one brief, meaningful experience to write about.
Students think of an important or special experience in their lives and then imagine what a photograph of that experience may look like. They draw a detailed picture in the polaroid and label it. Students then use that picture to help them list things they saw, heard, smelled, tasted, touched, and emotions they felt on the back. This ends up being a very helpful organizer when students need to add details to their story or remember things that happened. This will help them stay focused on their moment in time while they write.
