This is a fabulous book written with true emotion. I taught my eighth graders this book and had many boys crying at the ending. Though it is a lower reading level, it is truly relevant for older students due to the content. Intertwined in my teaching of this novel, my students also need background information on cancer. We used our informational reading skills to learn more about this disease and treatments. Throughout the novel, we also watched video clips of a man named Jake Bouma diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. He is currently working on a feature length documentary titled Let’s Do This: Facing Hodgkin Lymphoma. This unit is also differentiated to accommodate all learners and is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. This unit has fully developed lesson plans, links for additional teaching aides, and recommends some other great sellers on Teachers Pay Teachers.
