Engage your students as you read Patrick Ness's "A Monster Calls". This writing prompt is modeled after the Smarter Balanced writing prompts. Students are given the exposition/introduction of a story and must use knowledge of plot structure, dialogue, and characterization to build a logical story that follows.
This writing prompt is the beginning of the first tale in the story. I have students do this writing activity before we read the chapter. We share our ideas and after reading the actual tale we determine how an introduction/exposition can set the mood and affect the reader's prediction of following events.
This leads to a discussion on the why the monster told the tale and how it ended very different than we may have predicted with its "fairy-tale-ish" beginning.
